Note to Prosecution to Release 6 April Youth Detainees

Ahmed Shalabi, Mohamed Azzam, Mahmoud Gawish and Ahmed Ragab    27/ 7/ 2008

Lawyers, who are activists with Facebook social networking website and 6 April Youth Movement, filed a note to Public Prosecutor Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud calling for setting free the movement's youths who were arrested on charges of gathering and inciting citizens to demonstrate in Alexandria. They said the custodial remand is unjustified.

The lawyers said the arrested youths were singing patriotic songs and did not call for demonstration. They called for referring the detainees to the forensic doctor to check them for any physical assaults by security men. Most prosecutors who interrogated them said there were signs of physical assault.

A number of the detainees' colleagues organized a protest in front of the Syndicate of Journalists calling for releasing them. Sources from detainees' relatives said they were transported from Hadra Prison to Borg el-Arab Prison.

"Egyptian Demonstrators Defence" front condemned the detention of Facebook activists. The despotic practices by the authorities reflect their rejection of peaceful expression of opinion, the front said in a statement, of which Al-Masry Al-Youm got a copy.

Al-Masry Al-Youm got a message from one of the detainees in which he called for providing them with foodstuff.
