Congestion crisis of vehicles loaded with food commodities heading for Saudi Arabia and Arab Gulf countries are back again at the internal and external waiting plazas at Safaga maritime port as the two ferries Gama’a and Mahaba were banned from sailing for newly discovered technical faults at their bodies and motors.
This caused a 100-vehicle jam at the port awaiting the time to sail, according to some drivers.
Abdel Salam Khalil, a driver from Mansoura, said transportation minister’s decision to shift the course of two ferries from the navigational line Daba-Safaga to navigational line Safaga-Jeddah in order to transport the Mecca visitors caused traffic congestion at the port.
Truck drivers, Khalid Sallam and Mahmoud Abdullah, demanded that charges they pay to use the waiting yard be cancelled because they are not the cause behind the problem.
They said whoever comes first must leave first particularly those who drive trucks loaded with rapidly-damaging fruits and vegetables.
A source at Safaga Port said the number of trucks awaiting at the port is only 80 and they would be let sail after inspection is over.
