A human rights study has uncovered increasing human rights abuses by journalists against each other. Such abuses are mostly concentrated on differences in their intellectual orientations. The study has criticized some papers for allocating several columns and articles for attacking certain journalists in violation of the press code of ethics. The study, prepared by Andalus Institute For Tolerance and Anti-violence Studies, has classified violations made by journalists to each others in 12 categories representing names of editors, writers, journalists, newspapers and magazines either national such as Al-Ahram, Al-Akhbar, Akhbar Al-Youm, Al-Gomhuria, Rose el-Youssef (the daily), Rose el-Youssef (the weakly), Al-Mussawar, Al-Lewaa Al-Islami, Al-Shabab; partisan such as Al-Ahrar, Al-Ahali, Al-Arabi, Al-Ghad "Ayman Nour", Al-Ghad "Moussa Mostafa Moussa", Al-Karama, Al-Watani Al-Youm and Al-Wafd; or independent such as Al-Osboa, Al-Badeel, Al-Dostour, Al-Masry Al-Youm, Al-Fagr, Al-Nabaa, Sawt Al-Ummah, Nahdet Misr, Watani and Al-Khamis. The study, covered the period from Feb 2007 to Jan 2008, has confirmed that Rose el-Youssef daily was ranked first in terms of its abuses against some newspapers and journalists by 35.68%. It was followed by Al-Watani Al-Youm by 13.64%, Rose el-Youssef weakly, 11.57%; and Al-Gomhuria, 10.55%.
The least papers in terms of abuses against journalists topped by Al-Mussawar, 0.13% and Al-Karama, 0.04%, the study said, reporting no violations by Al-Khamis, Watani and Al-Shabab. Some 123 journalists and writers have practiced violations against their colleagues. The abusers topped by Abdullah Kamal, editor of Rose el-Youssef, by 26.17%%; Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, chief editor of Al-Gomhuria; Karam Gabr, board chairman of Rose el-Youssef, 7.05%, and Osama Saraya, editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram, 2.07%. The most newspapers and personalities that are subject to abuses and violation are topped by great writer Mohamed Hassanein Heikal, private newspapers, Al-Dostour, opposition papers, Ibrahim Issa, Al-Masry Al-Youm, Adel Hamouda, Fahmi Howeidi, Magdi Al-Gallad and Abdullah Kamal.
The private papers have been criticized by Al-Watani Al-Youm, 32.29%, Al-Gomhuria, 19.57%, Rose el-Youssef Magazine, 18.49%; Rose el-Youssef daily, 17.88, Al-Nabaa, 8.04%; and Akhbar Al-Youm, 3.32%. Al-Ahram came last with 0.41%.
Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, the institute's head Ahmed Sameih said the institute has prepared this study due to the campaign launched by Rose el-Youssef against Adel Hamouda after he published a photo of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto wearing a short dress immediately after she was assassinated.
The study came in accordance with "an eye on the press" project, which monitors and assesses papers and their commitment to the principles and values of tolerance, Sameih said.
