Ali Gomaa, Egypt's Grand Mufti, has called on all Muslim muftis to issue a unified fatwa (religious edict) on Islam's opinion on the possibility of postponing Hajj and Umrah due to swine flu. Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Gomaa said: "The fatwa should be issued by all Muslim scholars and the authorized jurisprudential academies in the Islamic world. The Muslim scholars should build their fatwas on technical reports from the bodies concerned, such as the ministries of health, environment and agriculture. Preserving human life and preventing diseases are among the Islamic law goals," adding that he supports the preventive actions taken by the Ministry of Health to protect citizens from the dangers of swine flu. He also supported Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Mohamed Sayed Tantawi's point of view that the Islamic Research Academy has to hold an emergency meeting to discuss this issue if the World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert for swine flu to the sixth level.
