The political and partisan arena in Egypt was dominated by a state of confusion due to a rumor that has spread lately about the possibility of dissolving Parliament, which no State or National Democratic Party (NDP) official could deny or confirm, regarding it as a decision that only the President can take.
Political parties and forces had different reactions to the rumor. Some were confused, while others found it a possibility that they should prepare for. Also, no political party or faction could determine if it would run for early elections, except the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), as Hussein Ibrahim, Vice-Chairman of the MB parliamentary bloc, said MB is always ready to run for elections.
Ibrahim added that all MB deputies were ordered to be present among the people from the first day they have won the last elections, noting that talk about the dissolution of the Council has been going on for 4 years without it happening, but MB always takes such talk seriously.
Hamdi Hassan, media spokesman for the bloc, said dissolving Parliament will kill political and parliamentary life in Egypt, as it would be done without consulting with the political forces, which would lead to more reluctance by citizens to participate in political life.
Mahmoud Abaza, Chairman of the Wafd Party, said political parties should always be ready to run for elections, pointing out that his party will have a problem if Parliament was dissolved, as some of his committees in the provinces have not been formed yet, and noting that there is no need to dissolve Parliament at this time.
Sayed Abdel Aal, Tagamu Party Secretary-General, said his party is not ready to run for early elections. “No party in Egypt is ready to run for early elections, not even NDP,” he said.
El-Sayed Bassiouni, Al-Ghad Party Secretary-General with Ayman Nour’s Front, said the party is currently determining the constituencies of the election, and the selection of the candidates.
Margaret Azer, Secretary-General of the Democratic Front Party, said that her party would stand a good chance in early elections.
