Families of Abdel Nasser and Mubarak at the Forefront of Mourners at Marwan Funeral, Sadat Family Absent

    Amr Bayoumi    2/ 7/ 2007

In an intensive political and economic presence, Dr. Ashraf Marwan’s funeral procession moved yesterday from the Omar bin Abdel Aziz mosque in Heliopolis.

Mourners were received by the deceased's wife, Dr. Mona Abdel Nasser, and their son Gamal Marwan as well as his uncles Khaled and Abdel Hakim, sons of late President Gamal Abdel Nasser.

Quran recitation continued until noon prayers by Sheikh Ahmed Neana. The funeral was  attended by Gamal Mubarak, the President’s son, Dr. Mohamed Sayid Tantawi, Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar, Dr. Fathi Sorour People’s Assembly Speaker, Safwat al-Sherif, Shura Council Speaker, Dr. Ali al-Semman, head of the dialogue committee at the Islamic Research Academy, Ibrahim Nafea, former al-Ahram board chairman, Major General Ashraf Nadim, representative of the President, Dr. Ali Abdurrahman, former president of Cairo University, Aqil Bashir, chairman of Telecom Egypt, Major General Nabil al-Askalani, director of the Air Force Hospital and Saeed Zada, delegated senior presidential chamberlain.

Following the prayers for the deceased, Gamal Mubarak left with Khaled Nasser who were followed by the People's Assembly and Shura Council speakers while waiting for the departure of the coffin from the mosque. Gamal Mubarak offered condolence to the wife of the deceased who embraced him while heavily crying.

None of the family members of former President Anwar Sadat attended the funeral. Some people commented that Gamal Sadat and his sisters did not attend due to the dispute between Roqia Sadat, the late President’s daughter and Dr. Hoda Abdel Nasser which reached courts.

Following the movement of the coffin, MP Mustafa Bakri talked to the media and stressed that the Israeli intelligence Service Mossad had killed Ashraf Marwan saying, “It is unreasonable for a man in Marwan’s status to commit suicide for no reason and without leaving even a message explaining what happened. After Mossad discovered that Marwan deceived them, they decided to liquidate him.”

Bakri cited as proof for the authenticity of his statements and Marwan’s innocence of the lies against him the high-level attendance represented in the eminent personalities topped by the son of the president and the People’s Assembly and Shura Council speakers.

Bakri went on to say that the Mossad, with the help of some agents who disagreed with Marwan, is trying to send a deluding message to the Egyptian people that Marwan was an agent.
